The Piazza Navona
The Piazza Navona is built on the exact site of the Stadium of Domitian which itself was constructed in AD 86. In the stadium 3,000 people at a time used to watch greek athletic events here. Nowadays, just strolling around with a strawberry ice-cream (gelato della fragola) on a sunny Saturday afternoon is about as good as it gets (IMHO). The obelisk in the middle of the piazza was put there by Bernini in 1651, and was taken from the Circus of Maxentius on the Via Appia. Don't even think about paddling in the fountains, there's a heavy fine for doing so. The 3 fountains are the Fountain of the Moors, The Fountain of the Four Rivers (by Bernini) and the Fountain of Neptune.
When I get round to it, there's more information to come.
