The Castel Sant' Angelo

Hadrian's mausoleum was built to house the remains of Hadrian and his family. and was the burial place of the Emperors to the time of Caracalla. In the foreground of the picture is the Aelian bridge which was built to connect the sepulchre with the rest of the city. The lower part of the original mausoleum can still be seen, however the top part consists mainly of fortifications which have been added since the time of Honorius. The Castel gets its name from the statue of the Archangel Michael which stands on its summit. In antiquity a statue of Hadrian driving a four horse statue stood there.
