The Church of San Nicola in Carcere

The Church of San Nicola in Carcere stands in the area that used to be the Forum Holitorium, or vegetable market. Four temples once stood in the market. The Temple of Pietas was destroyed to make way for the Theatre of Marcellus. The other 3 temples survived and nowadays are largely incorporated into The Church of San Nicola in Carcere. In the undercroft and at the front of the church can be found the remains of the podium and colonnade of the Temple of Juno Sospita. The right hand side of the church has remains of the temple of Janus built into it. The 3rd temple, that of Hope, or Speis, was closest to the Theatre of Marcellus.
