The Nymphaeum of Alexander Severus
Lanciani had reservations about the use of the name of this monument, preferring the name Lacus Orphei to the commonly held Nymphaeum of Alexander. At the beginning of the century it was popularly called "I trofei di Marie" during the middle ages it was called "Cimbrum Marie", and "Le Oche Armate" The monument was one of a series of large fountains which were fed by aquaducts to supply water to the people of Rome.
