Well Heads

The well heads that exist in the main area of the forum were originally used as service rooms in conjuction with a system of underground tunnels to service the gladitorial games that took place in the forum until 7AD. The first games, or Munera (sing. Munus), were organised in 264 BC by Decimus Junius Brutus in memory of his dead father and were held in the Forum Boarium. From then on temporary stands were erected in the forum. Once the decision had been made to move the games to the Saepta Julia in the Campus Martius; under the direction of the then Urban Praetor L. Naevius Surdinus, the forum was repaved. An inscription exists on the floor of the main area of the forum to him,. as does an inscription on the back of the Lacus Curtius marble slab.
