The Temple of Romulus

The Temple of the Deified Romulus is not directly named after the first king of Rome, but is rather named after the dead son of the Emperor Maxentius. This name is as described by medieval records and may be inaccurate. The building was converted into the vestibule of the saints Cosmas and Damian. The temple is thought to be built on the earlier remains of the Temple of Jupiter Stator (Jupiter the Stayer), where, according to the legend, after Romulus invoked the name of Jupiter fleeing Roman soldiers turned and fought back against the Sabines, and were winning until their wives came down from the Palantine to stop the battle. According to some sources it is likely that the temple has been misnamed totally and was in fact the Temple of Jupiter Stator. On the main picture above you can see the Temple of Romulus and in the foreground, to the left of the nun, are the remains of the slave quarters of a private house.
