This is one of the oldest monuments in the forum. The arrangement of black stone pavement and the marble slab enclosure dates to the Sullan period. However it is is built upon a shrine of great interest. The shrine dates to the first half of the 6th century BC and was dedicated to Vulcan and so is known as the Volcanol. In it were found an open air sanctuary with an altar close to a circular base for a statue, and a 4 sided cippus with an inscription in archaic Latin that was a sacred law dealing with rituals carried out by the king. It was here that Romulus, according to one legend, was killed by Senators after his rule became overly despotic.
