The Basilica of Maxentius

This magnificent building once housed a colossal seated statue of the Emperor Constantine, fragments

of which can be seen in the Palazzo dei Conservatores in the Capitoline museums. In case you're wondering about the scale, I don't stand high enough to reach the bottom of his neck, and that is a real doorway on the right of the picture.

Construction of the basilica was started by Maxentius, but following his defeat at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge it was finished by Constantine. The basilica was built on top of the state pepper warehouses, the Temple of Penates, and private houses. The basilica was the headquarters of the city Praefecture, and later in the 4th Century was used for the trials of senators.
