Excavations under the Basilica Julia revealed the atrium of the house of Scipio Africanus. This was bought using state money by his son-in-law Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus, the father of the Gracchi; and in 169 BC he built the Basillica Sempronia on the site. Julius Caesar planned the construction of a new Basilica on the site in 54BC, but shortly after its completion during the reign of Augustus it was destroyed by fire. The Basilica Julia was then rebuilt, and finally dedicated to the memory of Augustus' adoptive sons Gaius and Lucius Caesar in AD 12.
